Final Fantasy Resonance: A Nostalgic Journey Back to the Roots of Turn-Based RPGs (2026)

Final Fantasy Resonance Interview: A Deep Dive into the HD-2D RPG's Development and Inspiration

The highly anticipated Final Fantasy Resonance, the first HD-2D Final Fantasy game, is set to release on October 22, 2026. IGN's Michael Higham caught up with producer Keisuke Nakashima and director Hiroto Furuya to discuss the game's development, inspiration, and unique turn-based combat system.

The Birth of an Idea

The concept for Final Fantasy Resonance emerged around six to seven years ago, according to Nakashima. He was inspired by the desire to revisit the classic Final Fantasy experience, specifically Final Fantasy V, which he felt had room for exploration beyond the action-packed 3D games that dominated the series.

Furuya shared a similar sentiment, citing his love for the epic stories and unique characters of Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI, which he experienced on the SNES. He wanted to capture that sense of customization and adventure, drawing inspiration from the classic Final Fantasy elements like airships and crystals.

A Console Adaptation of Brave Exvius

The idea for a console adaptation of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius sparked the project. Nakashima recognized the potential for a console experience that would resonate with Final Fantasy fans, and the game's story and characters were designed to appeal to both newcomers and long-time fans.

Furuya emphasized the importance of delivering a traditional Final Fantasy storyline and experience, with a focus on protecting the planet and the unique motifs that define the series.

Turn-Based Combat System

The turn-based combat system in Final Fantasy Resonance is a blend of various Final Fantasy elements. Nakashima explained the goal was to ensure every character has a unique role and to incorporate depth into character builds, drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy V's Job system.

Furuya added that the team aimed to find a balance between the customization of Final Fantasy V's Job system and the unique traits of Final Fantasy VI's characters. The result is a system that offers clear and satisfying moments, with opportunities for players to explore different abilities and builds as they progress.

A Renaissance of Turn-Based RPGs?

The resurgence of turn-based RPGs is a topic of discussion. Nakashima acknowledges the current environment's variety of games and believes there's room for growth and evolution in pixel art turn-based games. Furuya attributes the trend to increased handheld hardware options, allowing for more accessible gameplay, and the influence of creators who grew up playing turn-based games now developing their own.
